Clay Holmes will face live hitters on Monday in New York, and while he still is “not exactly sure” about his availability for game one on Tuesday, he does expect to be on the ALDS roster.
Holmes told reporters on Sunday that he felt “free and easy” in his last bullpen while recovering from a shoulder strain, and was touching 95-96 mph on the radar gun during that session.
Holmes was a revelation for the Yankees earlier in the season, looking like one of the best closers in all of baseball before injuries to his back and shoulder hampered his second half. After pitching to a 1.31 ERA in the first half of the season, his ERA in the second half finished at 4.84.
But with multiple injuries already to the bullpen and Aroldis Chapman out of the equation after skipping a team workout, Holmes will be needed even if he isn’t at a full 100 percent.
