The Yankees are reportedly “mulling” the possibility of bringing back Frankie Montas as a depth rotation piece next season, according to Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Montas, one of the Yankees’ big trade deadline acquisitions in 2022, had a rocky New York tenure, to say the least. He struggled mightily after coming over from the A’s, was shut down for shoulder issues that had plagued him before the trade, and finished the year with a 6.35 ERA across eight starts.

Shoulder issues persisted into 2023, leading the righty to make just one appearance, at the end of the year following surgery. Montas pitched just 1.1 innings before becoming a free agent.

The Yankees have likely moved on from Domingo German, who just became a free agent, while Luis Severino is a free agent as well. So, there are plenty of questions in regards to who will fill out the rotation behind Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and potentially Clarke Schmidt.
