The YES Network TV broadcast was having some audio difficulties at the start of Wednesday’s game against the Rays, but as he often does, David Cone was able to turn it into a good laugh.
The audio glitch led to Cone’s speech sounding very slow and slurred, similar to the audio feedback that infamously made Rob Manfred sound slurred on the field after the 2020 World Series. Cone finished his scouting report on Nestor Cortes anyway, and afterward made a good joke about it.
“This is how I sound after a night out with David Wells,” Cone said.
Cone and Wells were known for their ability to enjoy the nightlife in New York and on the road. In his book “Full Count” with Jack Curry, Cone remembered sharing a hotel room with Wells when the Yankees were on the road, and holding parties in their room that attracted celebrities like Charlie Sheen and members of Metallica.
The audio issues were fixed almost immediately after that, and Cone was able to call another Yankee win without any other sound problems.
