The Yankees were able to come away with the win and the mini Subway Series sweep on Tuesday night, but if the Bombers weren’t able to hold on, all attention would have been paid to the inexplicable play that allowed the Mets to tie the game in the top of the sixth.
With the Yanks leading 2-1 with two outs, Jeff McNeil drove a double into the gap in left center, but wandered too far off the bag at second while Pete Alonso, being waved home, put on the brakes and headed back to third. Gleyber Torres received the relay throw and turned to see McNeil way off second, where nobody was covering the bag. As he moved towards second, Alonso broke for home, and instead of prioritizing the tying run and the lead runner, Torres tried to win a footrace to second, was late diving to try and tag McNeil, and the Mets tied it.
Between Torres’ poor decision and Isiah Kiner-Falefa positioning himself almost directly behind Torres instead of covering the bag, nobody could quite figure out what was going on.
