The Yankees announced Friday that they have designated RHP Ron Marinaccio for assignment, that the reciprocal 40-man roster move for reinstating RHP Cody Poteet from the 60-day injured list and optioning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Marinaccio, now 29, had a strong MLB debut in 2022, pitching to a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings, but as an up and down arm over the last two seasons, he had a 3.99 ERA in 47 1/3 innings last year and a 3.86 mark in 23 1/3 innings this year, with declining strikeout rates.
The righty did have a 2.04 ERA and 25.8% strikeout rate in 39 2/3 innings with the RailRiders, but he is out of options after this season, and the Yankees chose to cut him loose.
If Marinaccio clears waivers, he could be outrighted to Triple-A, but would become a minor-league free agent at the end of the season. If he is claimed, the team he goes to would have four years of team control and one more pre-arbitration year, although he would be ineligible for the postseason.
Poteet went on the IL in June with a right triceps strain and reached his 30-day rehab window limit on Thursday, so he had to be activated. He had made four starts for the Yankees earlier this season, going 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings, and will now be further depth as the team prepares for the playoffs.
