The Mets saw Max Scherzer make a rehab start and Jacob deGrom face live hitters on Tuesday – and now, the Yankees have some positive news of their own on injured starters.
Domingo German is set to commence a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Wednesday, his first action of 2022 after missing the entire season so far due to a right shoulder impingement.
The Yankees have previously said that German’s rehab will stretch him out as a starter, and given that he did not even start spring training before going on the IL, it is likely he could take the full 30-day rehab window before being activated.
When he is activated, however, it’s possible German goes to Triple-A, as he does have one minor-league option left and the Yankees’ current rotation is second in MLB with a 2.83 ERA (with the entire staff having a circuit-best 2.88 ERA overall).
German won 18 games for the Yankees in 2019 and looked like a long-term rotation piece, but he missed that postseason and the entire 2020 season due to suspension, and had a 4.58 ERA in 98 1/3 innings in 2021.
Deivi Garcia has struggled in Triple-A and the Yankees’ starting depth took a hit when Luis Gil was lost for the season due to Tommy John surgery, so a returning German would give them another option (along with JP Sears and possibly Clarke Schmidt) on the 40-man roster.
