Frankie Montas on Yankees struggles: 'Feel like a little bit of luck is not really on my side'

Frankie Montas has an ERA of 6.35 as a Yankee following Friday’s dud, but the struggling righty can’t be accused of a lack of confidence.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Montas believed that once he finds consistent command that he believes he has shown while in pinstripes, he’ll be back to his old self.

“Feel like, to be honest, I had a really good game tonight, but commanding all my pitches, two or three balls hit hard, just like I have in games where I haven’t been commanding my fastball or secondary pitches,” Montas said.

“I feel like a little bit of luck is not really on my side, but keep going out there and trying to do my best.”

There was nothing unlucky about the three-run bomb he served up to Willy Adames to allow the Brewers to get right back in the game on Friday after the offense gift-wrapped him a 5-0 lead. Perhaps there was some tough luck in his last start when Aaron Hicks had a nightmare of a time in left field against the Rays, but even then, Hicks’ misplays dominated the spotlight where Montas had given up noticeably loud contact throughout his start.

But Aaron Boone also believes Montas will come around and be the consistent No. 2 starter that the Yankees hoped he would be when they trade for him before the deadline.

“Just struggling to find that consistency, that good command to get in good counts to where he’s dictating things,” Boone said. “He was in some tough counts all night and kind of battling.

“When that happens, he’ll take off.”
