Gerrit Cole was bombed for six runs on three home runs in the first inning on Wednesday, leading to more questions about the righty’s status as an ace and his record-setting contract.
But despite allowing at least five runs for the second straight start, and his periodic implosions during his All-Star season, Gio still believes Cole can be trusted to deliver in October.
“I still would go with Gerrit Cole and I still trust him,” Gio said. “We’re fresh off of yesterday, which is tough to talk about him in this way, but his mentality, I know he wants to win. He’s a bulldog. He’s gonna be there and the intensity, and all the things you want from a guy who is the leader of your staff.”
Cole’s expectations might be higher given his contract, but Gio wants to remind everyone that Cole will likely never get back to the peak he showed in Houston, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t be a bonafide ace in the postseason, which he has already shown in New York in 2020.
“I always liked him,” Gio said. “He’s never gonna be as good as he was in Houston, and that’s the thing Yankee fans are gonna be pissed off about. He’s gonna be seen as a free agent bust in that regard at times because he’s never gonna be that good, but it doesn’t mean he’s not a No. 1, top-of-the-rotation guy you can trust in big games.”
