Gerrit Cole is on the mound for the Yankees on Tuesday night to begin a crucial 13-game stretch, and Craig isn’t feeling too confident that this grueling part of the schedule will get started on the right foot.
Why? He doesn’t trust the Yankees’ $324 million man.
“There’s a difference between wanting to trust someone and trusting someone,” Craig said during Tuesday’s show. “You trust your wife. You wanted to trust your last girlfriend before you met your wife. There’s a difference. You want to trust Gerrit Cole.
“I don’t trust him…I don’t trust him to walk my dog. I don’t know how you could.”
Cole’s last start began terribly, allowing three consecutive home runs before being bailed out by the Yankee bats, but before that, Cole had been looking like his dominant self since a couple hiccups to begin the season. But Craig still doesn’t take comfort when Cole is on the mound, and is convinced the vast majority of Yankee fans feel the same, even though C-Mac quickly disagreed.
C-Mac brought up Andy Pettitte as an example, citing that he was a mainly reliable playoff pitcher, but did have the occasional clunker, like game one of the 1996 World Series, game four of the 1998 ALCS, and the infamous dud in game six of the 2001 World Series, where he may have been tipping his pitches to the Diamondbacks.
“I didn’t bring up Andy Pettitte’s name, and the fact that you brought up a pitcher from 21 years ago who turned into a Yankee great, is obnoxious,” Craig said.
Safe to say Craig won’t be feeling too relaxed watching the game Tuesday night when Cole is on the bump.
