Giancarlo Stanton placed the ultimate exclamation point on his first All-Star selection as a Yankee by blasting a game-tying home run en route to an MVP honor.
It was another landmark in his pinstriped tenure that began with frustrating bouts with injury and a brutal showing in the 2018 ALDS, but over the past two seasons, the Yankee slugger has been healthy, productive, and money in October.
“When things get tough, you've got two roads to go,” Stanton said. “You can go backwards, you can run away, or you can stick it through.”
Stanton stayed with it, and since the start of last season, has 59 home runs in 215 games, posting an OPS of .857. While many questioned his contract and the Yankees’ trade during his first few years in pinstripes, Stanton never questioned that he could thrive in New York, and once he got healthy, he proved it, and did again on another big stage at the Midsummer Classic.
“There’s decisions you don’t second guess,” Stanton said. “There’s decisions you have to revamp and make adjustments and just step up to the challenge.
“I’ve always worked hard. I’ve always tried to get better and improve in any way possible. It’s just good to be in this situation.”
