Giancarlo Stanton is mulling over participating in the Home Run Derby now that it’s in Los Angeles near his hometown, but Gio says he and any Yankee fans should want no part of the 2022 All-Star swinging for the fences.
“That’s an oblique waiting to happen,” Gio said.
“[Pete] Alonso has been good with this the last couple years. Stanton is having a healthy year, Judge is having a healthy year, I don’t want to see either one of those guys in the Home Run Derby.”
If Stanton participates, it would be the fourth time in his career, participating in 2014 when he led the league in home runs, 2016 when he won the event, and 2017 when he again led the league in homers with 59. Stanton could decide to come back and compete now that he is an All-Star for the first time as a Yankee, but Gio strongly cautions against it.
“It would be exciting,” Gio said. “But I just would worry about him.”
