Disappointed Giancarlo Stanton says injuries 'this often' are 'unacceptable'

Giancarlo Stanton is sidelined for likely six weeks with a hamstring strain, the latest in a long line of lower body injuries that have plagued the slugger since arriving to the Yankees in 2018.

For Stanton, the frustration over the constant IL stints is just as potent as it is for the team and the fanbase.

“It’s unacceptable,” Stanton said, via Chris Kirshner of The Athletic. “This often. The team relies on me and I can’t have this continue to happen and put us in a tough spot weren’t prepared for. It’s my duty and responsibility to be out there.”

Stanton hasn’t held up that end up the bargain during his time in New York, at least not since 2019, when he played in just 18 games. An Achilles injury limited him to just 110 games last season, his fifth All-Star campaign, and he hasn’t played more than 140 games since his debut season in 2018. He will almost certainly come up short of 140 games this season, which was off to a strong start with four home runs and an .854 OPS.

Instead of building on that strong start, Stanton will take an all-too-familiar place on the IL.

“The disbelief and disappointment,” Stanton said, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “Is hard to put into words.”
