Gleyber Torres' offensive decline since All-Star break is staggering

Gleyber Torres went 0-for-4 in Monday’s loss to the Angels, dropping his August batting average to just .177 with a .452 OPS heading into the final game of the month.

But Torres’ struggles have stretched further back than the calendar month, as the Yankees second baseman and once hyped young phenom has had a brutal time at the plate since the All-Star break, back when he was considered a legit candidate to earn a spot in the Midsummer Classic.

Torres ultimately did not get his third career All-Star nod, and has slid drastically downhill ever since. In fact, as noted by James Smyth of the YES Network, Torres’ slugging percentage has dropped 189 points since the break, the fifth biggest decline in all of baseball among qualified hitters.

Torres was slashing .268/.325/.484 at the break, but is way down to .187/.221/.295 ever since. To put into context, as noted by Smyth, Torres is slugging worse than the notoriously power-sapped bat of double play partner Isiah Kiner-Falefa since the break.

The Yankees’ complete lack of power at both middle infield spots, coupled with Josh Donaldson’s season-long struggles at the plate from the third base spot, it’s no wonder the Yanks are struggling so badly offensively and watching their lead in the AL East continue to shrink.

As for Torres, who is coming off two straight disappointing seasons, his tenure in New York could be coming to an end after he as reportedly part of a trade package at the deadline for Marlins starter Pablo Lopez that eventually fell through.
