Potential trade target Luis Castillo gave the Yankees one heck of an audition on Thursday night, holding the Bombers hitless through five innings and allowing just one run on two hits in seven innings of work in a win for the Reds.
The Yanks are reportedly one of the favorites to land Castillo, but there is one potential issue in the eyes of Boomer and Gio: if Castillo is traded to the Bronx, will there be a problem with Castillo’s long hair?
The Yankees’ hair and facial hair policy has been well known, and is a polarizing topic among fans. Some want to see the old tradition done away with, while others see it as a tradition that emphasizes the Yankees’ business-like approach to winning.
Boomer is in the latter, and says there’s no way the Yanks would change it for Castillo, and doesn’t seem to think they should.
“There’s no way the Yankees are relenting to that,” Boomer said during Friday’s show.
“You just want to wave goodbye to tradition and history? It’s not something that I would worry about if I were running a ballclub, but it’s steeped in tradition, and it is what it is.”
Gio was on the other side of the fence.
“How silly is that?” Gio said. I’m sorry…it’s silly.
“At some point, there’s gonna be a guy that the Yankees want bad enough in a certain situation, and they’re gonna say, ‘Enough of this.’”
Gio, then talking over the music of a classic YES Network promo, mocked the Yankees’ policy and how many see it as an honorable demand of greatness.
“’We’ll do everything to win but go over the luxury tax or trade a guy with long hair and a beard,” Gio imitated. “You paid $7 million to come for season tickets to come see the Yankees, and we refuse to have someone with long hair or a beard on the team. You want to see us win, we’d rather see clean-shaven guys with short hair than guys with long hair holding up a World series trophy.’
“’The New York Yankees: falling short because we didn’t trade for Luis Castillo. Instead, you’ll see Jordan Montgomery give up seven earned runs in two innings against the Astros.’”
