Aaron Boone was reported to be safe from losing his job after the Yankees’ ALCS exit, and team owner Hal Steinbrenner all but confirmed that news when talking to Mark Didtler of the Associated Press on Wednesday.
“As far as Boone’s concerned, we just signed him and for all the same reasons I listed a year ago, I believe he is a very good manager,” Steinbrenner told Didlter. “I don’t see a change there.”
Boone’s contract expired at the end of last season, when the Bombers ended a roller coaster season with a whimper, losing a lopsided Wild Card Game to the hated Red Sox. The Yanks were back in the ALCS this season for the second time during Boone’s tenure, but once again looked overmatched against the Astros.
Many fans thought the Wild Card Game loss in 2021 was an opportune time to make a managerial change, but he signed a new three-year deal, and Steinbrenner doesn’t seem to be cutting that contract short.
