Speaking at the owners meetings on Tuesday, Hal Steinbrenner made it clear that he wouldn’t let money get in the way of re-signing Aaron Judge, and also added that he has told Judge his contract wouldn’t stop the team from making other additions to the team.
“My budget for Judge is going to be what I feel we can do,” Steinbrenner said. “It's not limitless, obviously. But am I going to make moves before we're able to — in my opinion, we're going to be able to sign Aaron.
That's not going to stop me from signing other people.
“We have plenty of ability — and Aaron and I talked about this — to make other things happen, too.”
The Yanks already have done that, re-signing Anthony Rizzo to a multi-year deal, while Jon Heyman reports that the team has checked in on the likes of Brandon Nimmo, Trea Turner, and Carlos Correa. As for Judge, while Steinbrenner notes that there of course will be a limit to where they go on a contract offer, he has made it clear to Judge what the team’s desire is.
“I’ve absolutely conveyed that I want him to be a Yankee for the rest of his life, no doubt about that,” Steinbrenner said. “He knows that. The rest is up to him and his family and where they want to go from here. But we’re going to do what we can, I assure you.”
