When Hal Steinbrenner was asked by reporters on Wednesday if the team had an idea of what it might want to do at the trade deadline earlier this month, he gave a response that infuriated Brandon Tierney.
“We haven’t even sat down to begin to discuss what we’re gonna do a month from now,” Steinbrenner said. “As usual, we’re gonna look at all options and we’re gonna figure out where our strengths are, what are weaknesses are, if any, and address them, just like we did last year. But it’s just too early for that.”
Tierney wanted it to be known to Steinbrenner that the Yankees absolutely have some weaknesses despite having the best record in the league (Joey Gallo, anyone?), and that the front office better be talking about trades with the deadline just over three weeks away.
“You’ve got three guys playing every day with an OPS under .700,” Tierney said. “I got news for you Hal, you’ve got a couple [weaknesses].”
BT didn’t want to believe that it could be true that the Yanks haven’t even begun discussing potential deadline upgrades, especially when they seem to be more suited for a World Series run than recent years past.
“It’s just maddening,” BT said.
“Why not be forthright and say ‘I’m not gonna get into specifics here?’ There’s a way to present it as ‘We’re doing our due diligence, we’re doing our homework.’ Why not just say that?”
