Yankees coaching staff has lots of concern, but little answers for Luis Severino's struggles

Luis Severino allowed seven runs on 10 hits without escaping the third inning on Thursday night, and the two-time All-Star is at a loss when it comes to his disastrous stretch over his last seven starts.

“I don’t feel good about any of my pitches right now,” Severino said. “In the bullpen, I had a good feeling about my secondary pitches…but none of my pitches are working right now.”

Severino looked brilliant in his first two starts off the IL, but has since pitched to an ERA of 9.48 since, and his coaches seem to be just as confounded that the former Cy Young finalist has been so unproductive of late.

“It's very concerning in the sense that, any time one of our guys goes out there and gives up that many hits, it's something that we want to look at,” pitching coach Matt Blake said.

Of course, health is always a concern with the oft-injured Severino, but the Yankees don’t seem to believe that is the issue, which makes Severino’s struggles all the more puzzling.

“He's a great pitcher and I think physically, he's good,” Aaron Boone said. “That is concerning. It's on all of us to get it right.”
