Aaron Judge continues to carry the Yankees, smashing his 54th home run of the season on Monday afternoon, as the slugger and pending free agent approaches the illustrious 61.
The Yanks are crumbling around Judge as the lead in the AL East dwindles, but Boomer and Gio agree that regardless of what happens the rest of the way, bringing Judge back has to be atop the Yankees’ priority list.
“How this season ends shouldn’t have anything to do with keeping Judge or not,” Gio said. “Whether you win a World Series or are bounced immediately, you have to keep him…you cannot lose him. Hal Steinbrenner has to know that.”
The Yankees were unable to extend Judge before or during the season, and Judge betting on himself has clearly paid off, proving himself to be one of the top two candidates for MVP this season, and quickly approaching an American League record that hasn’t been touched in over 60 years.
The Yanks will now likely have to enter a bidding war with other teams, but they will have to pay the price necessary to keep Judge in pinstripes.
“That would be one of the worst business decisions in their history if they let him go,” Gio said.
