Yankees ineptitude in extra innings takes center stage again

The Yankees dropped yet another extra-inning game on Tuesday night, as their struggles in the 10th inning and beyond have become even more glaring as the season has progressed.

The Yanks managed to scratch across a run in the 11th against the Reds thanks to a wild pitch, but Mark Leiter Jr. promptly gave the run right back before surrendering a walk-off single for the team’s ninth loss in their last 12 games.

The defeat dropped the Bombers to 1-6 in extras this year, and they have lost all five of their extra-inning games on the road. The scuffling offense has been particularly dreadful in such situations, as the bats have produced a putrid two runs in seven extra-inning contests so far this year, posting a collective .063 batting average and a .268 OPS along the way.

On the road, the Yanks have managed just one single hit in extra innings this year, but it isn’t just specific to 2025. New York has been the worst team in the league in extras since 2020, posting a 12-27 record. They have consistently struggled to plate the automatic runner that starts extra innings on second base during the regular season, and it continues to cost them.

The Reds were 1-6 in extras this year while scoring just one run before running into the Yankees on Tuesday night.
