Yankees notes: Jameson Taillon 'on track,' Domingo German might miss Opening Day

Jameson Taillon will likely be ready for the start of the season after offseason ankle surgery, but the Yankees could be without one of their depth pieces in the rotation.

Addressing the media on Monday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Domingo German had a recurrence of shoulder issues pop up in January, and he is likely to start the season in the injured list.

German won 18 games for the Yankees in 2019, but missed all of 2020 serving a domestic violence suspension. He was 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 98 1/3 innings last season, but shoulder inflammation cost him all of August and September, and he allowed two runs in a 1 1/3-inning relief appearance on Oct.
1 in his only outing off the IL.

The righty has just re-started a throwing program, per Boone, and may not be ready for April 7, so it’s even better news that Taillon, who missed a couple starts late last season due to an ankle tendon injury that required surgery, should be good to slot into the rotation.

“I think Jamo should be on time,” Boone said. “Jamo is in a good spot.”

The Yankees do have the depth to fill German’s absence, as they can slot in one of Nestor Cortes, Luis Gil, Michael King, or Clarke Schmidt behind Gerrit Cole, Luis Severino, Taillon, and Jordan Montgomery in the rotation, and still be covered even if Taillon isn’t ready on for the first week of the season.

They’re also currently missing one of their relievers, as RHP Stephen Ridings is dealing with some “shoulder and back stuff,” of which Boone said, “We’ll see where that leads.”
