Joey Gallo recently told NJ.com that he isn’t the kind of player that will beat the shift or play small ball, and he didn’t seem too motivated on trying to be that player.
With those comments, in addition to his four strikeout night on Monday, Craig Carton has had enough.
Opening Tuesday’s show, Craig ripped Gallo’s refusal to try and expand his game, as his current approach has not been producing results since coming to New York, and said his time in New York needs to come to an end.
“How about a little something we call work ethic? How about practice? How about being a professional?” Craig said. “You’re batting .190! You’re telling me it’s gonna get worse?
“You gotta go.”
With Gallo not producing the power he had in Texas, when he was an All-Star with the Rangers, the inflated strikeout totals are even more glaring. He has heard plenty of boos at Yankee Stadium since last summer, and has seen plenty of wide-open grass and dirt on the left side of the field because of his pull-happy approach, but has said he isn’t that kind of player to make opposing teams pay for shifting on him.
That’s where Craig draws the line.
“It’s one thing we know you’re a .200 hitter and gonna get a lot of walks, I get all that,” Craig said. “My issue is not that. My issue is, ‘I’m not willing to put the work in to try to be better.’ He’s not gonna hit 45 runs this year…so you cant defend the unwillingness to try anything else. I wouldn’t tolerate it if I’m the New York Yankees.
“You’re making $12 million a year, you can’t play here anymore.”
Evan also believes the Gallo experiment is coming to an end, and at this rate, he certainly won’t be playing any meaningful games for the Yanks in October.
“He’s not gonna be the everyday left fielder for this team,” Evan said. “He’s not playing in a playoff game.”
