It’s hard to find many sour notes to the 2022 Yankees as they come off a sweep of the Angels and enter the weekend with the league’s best record, but if there was one to point out, it’s Joey Gallo.

The struggling outfielder has been one of the worst everyday hitters in baseball since being traded to New York last summer, and now holds an OPS below .600 on the season and is batting .177.

If you ask Tiki Barber, the 28-year-old Gallo is on pace to put together one of the worst contract years of all time as he prepares for free agency this winter.

“He should have five or six good years of baseball ahead of him,” Tiki said during Friday’s show. “But for a guy who’s in a contract year, Joey Gallo might be having the worst contract year of anyone you can remember.

“The hits aren’t coming in moments when you need those hits to come. As much as I love talking about how good this Yankees team is…but when I see that gaping hole in left field with Joey Gallo, I gotta believe the Yankees are gonna make a move with him at some point.”

Gallo is a two-time All-Star with 40-homer seasons not too far in his rearview, but he hasn’t shown signs of much life in New York, and while his trade value is likely very low given his recent production and pending free agency, Tiki says it might be time for the Yanks to make a move and give up the Gallo experiment.

“They can’t do it right now,” Tiki said. “But Joey Gallo has become a little bit of a bane for a Yankee team that has already won 36 games and has the best record in baseball.”
