The Yankees’ catching woes are apparently worse than they seemed: manager Aaron Boone revealed Tuesday night that Jose Trevino has been sidelined with a right wrist sprain, explaining why he hasn’t played in nearly a week.
Trevino last played last Thursday, March 9, and according to Boone, the backstop felt some pain in his right wrist during a swing in that day’s game, and imaging revealed an issue – but the good news is it doesn’t appear to be a long-term thing.
“He’s just got some inflammation in there, and they didn’t feel an injection was necessary,” Boone said. “As soon as he’s got nothing in there, then he’ll start hitting again. It should probably only be a couple more days.”
Boone expects Trevino to be back in action by the weekend, and is “definitely not” worried about Opening Day – nor is Trevino.
“I feel really good today,” Trevino said Wednesday morning. “I felt like I made a lot of progress in the past couple days. I’m super positive about it, like I feel very confident in it.”
Still, it’s another blow, short-term as it is, to the Yankees’ catching depth. Kyle Higashioka remains away from the team at the World Baseball Classic – an absence that could extend another few days if Team USA wins tonight and advances to the quarterfinals – and Josh Breaux, Ben Rortvedt, and Austin Wells are all shut down with injuries.
Non-roster invitees Rodolfo Duran and Carlos Narvaez are the only healthy catchers left in the original group of spring invites, although the team did add Nick Ciuffo on a minor-league deal last week and added him to the group.
