It took Josh Donaldson just 11 innings to earn his pinstripes.
With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, Donaldson sent a slow roller through the middle to score Manfred Man Isiah Kiner-Falefa (also playing his first game with the Yanks), giving the Bombers a walk-off win on Opening Day over the rival Red Sox.
“I mean it’s huge early on, to help my team win the game,” Donaldson said. “It was so much more than me, our guys did a great job today. Offense battled back and it’s awesome. We’re resilient. We have a good ball club. We went out there and played hard, went to extras and got the job done. Nobody was fazed. We knew we could get the job done, it was just a matter of time.”
It is technically the Yankees’ second straight regular season walk-off win, as Aaron Judge clinched a playoff spot with an infield single in the regular season finale against the Rays in 2021.
It was also the first Opening Day walk-off for the Yanks in a debut since 1957.
