The Yankees got some good news on two injured players Thursday into Friday but got bad news on another.
First, the bad news: Josh Donaldson was transferred from the COVID-19 injured list to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 24, with right shoulder inflammation. To open a spot on the 40-man roster, RHP Chad Green was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Donaldson has been feeling soreness for a few days and had a cortisone shot earlier this week, according to manager Aaron Boone, and Donaldson worked out back in New York, so the skipper is hopeful "it's just a short-term thing."
As for the good news, while neither DJ LeMahieu nor Aaron Hicks are in Friday’s lineup, both believe they will be options this weekend.
Hicks was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup due to right hamstring tightness, but “definitely” felt like it was a short-term thing.
“I kind of felt it a little bit yesterday during the game. It just kind of got tight on me and I wasn’t really able to run at full speed," Hicks said after Thursday’s game. “And then I woke up this morning and it still felt tight. We did some treatment and stuff like that to get ready for tonight’s game and it just wasn’t cooperating. But I definitely feel like I’ll be able to be in there tomorrow. That’s what I’m planning on."
LeMahieu, meanwhile, still has soreness in his wrist, but was already feeling better Thursday night from the cortisone shot he got earlier in the week.
“I don’t want to get too excited, but I’ve been testing it all day, and it’s definitely felt better as the day’s gone on," DJLM said Thursday. "I think that cortisone finally just took and it feels really good.”
Boone then said prior to Friday's game that there was “marked improvement," but he wanted to see LeMahieu go through early work, with the idea that DJLM could be available off the bench Friday night and back in the starting lineup Saturday.
Friday’s Yankees lineup had the same five players in the outfield and at third base and DH as Thursday’s group: Aaron Judge in center, Joey Gallo in right, Miguel Andujar in left, Marwin Gonzalez at third, and Matt Carpenter as the DH.
