Keith: Yankees likely won't make other big moves as thrill of Juan Soto trade wears off

As the MLB hot stove remains mainly cold after the holidays, many are wondering what the Yankees will do as a next move after failing to land Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Keith isn’t expecting much.

“If they’re not able to get Monty, they’re gonna make a trade, but it’s not gonna be for the Corbin Burnes type,” Keith said. “Maybe the Jesus Luzardo type will be there. It’s gonna be a third, fourth, or fifth starter.

“We’ve seen [Cashman] in the past make moves for the bullpen and starting pitching…I’m not expecting any more big names. I think they’re gonna enter spring training with ‘It’s a competition, and Clayton Beeter, Will Warren, and Luis Gil are in the competition.’ Kind of like Clarke Schmidt had to earn it.”

Keith could see the Yankees making a marginal add at the back of the rotation, and then come into spring training banking on all that went wrong with last year’s rotation finally go right in 2024.

“I think they’re really going to bank on Gerrit Cole winning another Cy Young, Nestor Cortes returning to All-Star form, and Carlos Rodon not having a rough half a year, but having a decent enough full year,” Keith said. “Clarke Schmidt being there, and the last spot being up for competition.

“It’s been so many weeks since the Juan Soto and [Alex] Verdugo news, that’s worn off now, and now fans are starting to say ‘Oh, this team has spent zero dollars this offseason.’”
