Yankees trying to pull out all the stops with various superstitions to overcome rough stretch

Baseball has long been known as a sport of superstition (just ask Wade Boggs), and the 2022 Yankees seem to be keeping that tradition very much alive.

As told by Sports Illustrated’s Stephanie Apstein, the struggling Yanks have tried to pull out all the stops during their rough stretch of play that had them with the worst record in baseball in the month of August as recently as this past weekend. Josh Donaldson burned sage in the clubhouse like he was Kyrie Irving in Boston, while Gerrit Cole and Kyle Higashioka tweaked their outfits, whether it be their undershirts or cleats.

“We’ve had intermittent success with positions in the dugout and collective buy-in to chewing gum or something like that,” Cole said, via Apstein. “But I would say that, no, there's not been one thing that's really worked.”

Aaron Judge has a previous familiarity to superstition, spitting out his wad of gum every time he makes an out, meaning he would hope to have a very bland and flavorless piece of bubble gum in his mouth by the time the game ends.

As of late, the Yanks have had very fresh pieces of gum to chew on, as the offense has underperformed drastically during their sudden swoon, but the team hopes some of their superstitions might finally pay off in wins.
