Luis Severino has a confession to make.
When the Yankees announced the seemingly inconsequential trade for Jose Trevino, seemingly a depth piece and insurance for the injured Ben Rortvedt, Severino thought New York had just brought in a fellow pitcher.
“At the beginning, when I saw we got reliever, I thought it was this reliever from Oakland,” Severino said, referencing A’s pitcher Lou Trivino. “Then I saw it was a catcher…it was a great move for us. He’s been great all year.”
Trevino came up big yet again on Friday, pinch hitting in the 13th inning and recording his second walk-off hit of the season. Trevino has become the team’s starting catcher and an All-Star candidate, while Trivino has a 9.20 ERA over in Oakland.
Safe to say Severino is happy he was wrong.
“Trevino has been so huge for us,” Severino said. “He’s been so solid all year. He put up a good at-bat there and got us the win.”
