Luis Severino was bailed out by his offense on Tuesday night, but he still didn’t hide from the fact that he was noticeably ineffective for the third straight time, and despite finally being healthy, has not shown the level of production that the Yankees were hoping to get from the former Cy Young candidate.
“I didn’t get better. I need to be a better pitcher,” Severino said. “I feel like every time they give me the ball, I'm not helping the team right now.
“I just need to figure out what’s going on, and hopefully I can do that soon.”
Severino liked what he saw from his fastball on Tuesday, a change from previous starts, though he did groove a 95 mph fastball right down the middle to Brandon Nimmo, his first batter of the game, resulting in a game-tying home run. But even after a nightmare start, Severino was able to grind through 4.2 innings, though he has now allowed a staggering 17 runs on 22 hits in his last 13.2 innings of work.
“At least the fastball was there today,” Severino said. “Need to do a better job of putting guys away. In that last inning there, Boone gave me the leverage of going one more hitter, and I didn’t deliver. So I need to get better.”
