Yankees' marathon win had all kinds of history involved

The Yankees hung on to win a draining 11-inning marathon on Monday night, one that rolled on for four hours and 52 minutes.

The wild affair included ejections, multiple blown saves and yet another game decided by two runs or less, which the Yankees have been a part of 62 times this season, the most in the majors. Per the YES Network, the Bombers are now 40-22 in those games, the best mark in the majors.

But there were other pieces of history in Monday’s wild game. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the game was the first time in MLB history that both teams scored at least a run in the seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th innings. The Yanks plated a run in the seventh on a Luke Voit single, then the Royals responded with a sac fly. Then Aaron Judge and Andrew Benintendi traded RBI singles in the eighth before Voit homered in the ninth, only for Kansas City to tie the game with an RBI single by Nicky Lopez. Both teams plated a pair in the 10th, and for good measure, both crossed the plate at least once in the 11th as well, but the Yankees hung on for the victory.

The Yanks were able to secure the win thanks to Wandy Peralta, who allowed one run in the 11th while nursing a three-run lead, picking up his third save of the season. It was the Yankees’ fifth straight pitcher to come into the game with a save opportunity after the previous four had all recorded a blown save. That was tied for the most in a single game in baseball history since 1901. The only other time it happened during that span of 120 years was back in 1995 in a game between the Astros and Cubs.

Jonathan Loaisiga, Chad Green, Zack Britton, and Clay Holmes all blew a save on Monday night.

It was a wild game with plenty of unprecedented outcomes, but most importantly for the Yanks, it resulted in a win.
