The Yankees matched an unfortunate franchise record on Thursday night thanks to a nightmare first inning that saw the Twins absolutely unload on youngster Jhony Brito.
Coming into the series opener with loads of promise following a strong spring and two superb outings to begin the season, Brito was knocked around in the opening frame, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back home runs [the latter two allowed by Colten Brewer] in a nine-run first inning, one that Brito was unable to finish. When the smoke cleared, Brito had allowed seven runs on six hits in 0.2 innings, while Brewer allowed another four in 3.1 innings of work.
The nine runs allowed by the Yanks in the first tied the most the team has ever allowed in an opening frame in franchise history, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
The 11-2 loss was one to quickly forget, as the Yanks host Minnesota for three more games, beginning Friday night with Nestor Cortes on the mound.
