Tiki & Tierney: Yankees, Mets laying groundwork for best baseball summer ever in NYC

The Mets just salvaged a series sweep against the mighty Dodgers while the Yankees beat up on the lowly Tigers, helping both teams end the weekend with the most wins in their respective leagues.

The two New York squads look like the real deal two months into the season, and Brandon Tierney says we could be in line to see one of the most memorable baseball summers in the history of the Big Apple.

“There’s really not a lot to complain about. It’s borderline uncharted territory,” Tierney said during Monday’s show. “We’re pushing middle of June, not quite halfway yet but past the symbolic mark of Memorial Day where you’ve seen enough to know what the assets on the teams are and what the deficiencies are.

“This is setting up, at the risk of putting the cart before the horse, as maybe the best baseball summer ever, in our lifetime.”

Both teams have had simultaneous success in the past, even in this millennium, but not to this level. Both teams were strong before facing off in the World Series in 2000, but the Bombers were dreadful down the stretch. In 2006, both won 97 games en route to division titles, and in 2015, the Mets were the story of the second half of the season behind Yoenis Cespedes, while the Yanks backed into the playoffs after a surprising early-season surge.

But so far, in 2022, both squads look like titans of their leagues, adding to the baseball fever that already exists in the city.

“Both teams not only have the most wins in their respective leagues, but also the fewest losses,”  Tiki said. “It feels like there’s no limit to where these teams can go, and they’re not finished yet. Especially the Mets, who will get Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer back.”
