Michael King won’t pitch again for the Yankees this season, but he received good news in terms of his injured elbow.
King told Sport’s Illustrated’s Gary Phillips on Thursday that he will not need Tommy John surgery, and that an exam on Thursday showed that the righty reliever’s UCL was “intact,” with “no partial tearing” to be seen either.
“It looks great,” King told Phillips. “I was very relieved to hear that. Everything checked out.”
King needed to wait until he was able to position his elbow for a clearer MRI, as he initially was unable to do so due to the stress fracture in his right elbow. But he was able to get that imaging done on Thursday, and the news was good.
Now, King can begin throwing again as soon as the end of October, and should be cleared for a normal offseason and spring training to be ready for 2023.
King suffered the injury after throwing a pitch in July, ending the season for arguably the team’s most valuable bullpen arm.
