The initial roster moves from the Yankees’ flurry of trades Monday are in.

Prior to Monday’s game, the Yankees transferred RHPs Miguel Castro and Luis Severino to the 60-day IL, opening a pair of 40-man roster spots; one will go to accommodate the extra player added in Monday’s deals, and one will go to RHP Carlos Espinal, who was signed to a Major League contract and selected to the active roster.

RHP Clarke Schmidt was optioned to Triple-A to open a 26-man spot for Espinal.

Severino, who has been out since July 14 with a mild lat strain, was set to begin a throwing program on Monday after a two-week shutdown, but he is now ineligible to return until Sept. 12 at the earliest.

Castro, meanwhile, has been shut down since July 13 with a shoulder strain, and was still scheduled to be shut down from throwing for at least another two weeks. He, too, is ineligible to return until Sept. 11 now that he is on the 60-day injured list.

Espinal, 25, is a former international free agent signee back in 2015 who has split 2022 between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 2.59 ERA in 48 2/3 innings over 28 games.

The righty, who just reached Triple-A for the first time in April, will be able to provide some length out of the bullpen Tuesday behind Domingo German, who has gone 3.0 and 4 2/3 innings in his two starts since returning from the injured list.

Espinal’s stay in the Bronx could be a shorter one, though, as the Yankees will need to make three moves to activate the three righties – starter Frankie Montas and relievers Scott Effross and Lou Trivino – they acquired in a pair of deals Monday.

Schmidt is 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 30 innings over 16 appearances (one start) for the Yankees this year. This is his third option to the minors, meaning he can only come back twice more in 2022, but the Yankees may also now have the chance to stretch him out as a depth starter again after the losses of JP Sears, Hayden Wesneski, and Ken Waldichuk, three-fifths of their Triple-A rotation, in Monday’s deals.
