Nestor Cortes was asked about what Aaron Judge has meant to the Yankees, in what is potentially his final season as a Yankee, and Cortes couldn’t have given a much more glowing review.
“He’s meant everything,” Cortes said. “I think I’m able to say that if he’s back here next year, he’s our captain. He’s our next captain. We follow everything he does.
“Most of the guys in there agree with me.”
Judge being the first Yankee captain since Derek Jeter has long been pondered by Yankee fans, but he will have to re-sign for that to become a reality. If he does indeed return to New York, he will have plenty of support in the clubhouse to be given the illustrious label of Yankees team captain.
“I feel like we follow his steps every time,” Cortes said. “He's the last one to leave from the clubhouse on the road and we don't leave until he leaves. We follow his act, we follow everything he does.
“He leads by example... he's a great baseball player but he's a better human. He treats everybody the same and follows up on everybody every day. That’s what allows him to be who he is.”
