The Morning Show crew took turns playing Yankees GM last week, and on Friday, it was BT’s turn to step into Brian Cashman’s shoes.
And he also said it was time to trade Giancarlo Stanton.
“Who do I think should absolutely be gone next season? Hicks? Gone,” BT said. “This one will surprise you, but I’m trading Stanton. He’s not the problem, he’s more of an answer than not when he’s in there, but he’s never healthy. So I will eat 60-65 percent of the contract, and I will give you, not a top prospect, but an enticing enough lower-level prospect to make it happen.
“Donaldson? Gone. Can’t play next year. He got old fast.”
Stanton, when factoring in the money the Marlins ate on his big contract and the money the Yanks can use to subsidize the deal each year, Stanton is actually making close to $23 million per year from the Yankees (roughly $27 million when not factoring in subsidized money). Comparing that to other big contracts signed by stars at similar or even lesser levels of production as Stanton, and the AAV isn’t so egregious. In fact, it’s less than Corey Seager, Justin Upton, and only a fraction more than Christian Yelich and Marcus Semien.
But if the Yanks are to shed Donaldson and his contract as well, they will likely have to attach another prospect to that deal, meaning if the Yanks are parting ways with both Stanton and Donaldson, it would likely take multiple prospects to do so.
