Yankees have already optioned trade deadline acquisition Jake Bird to Triple-A

One of the Yankees’ bullpen acquisitions on trade deadline day has been sent down.

The Yanks announced Tuesday morning that they have optioned Jake Bird to Triple-A Scranton, and will likely activate Mark Leiter Jr. from the IL as a corresponding move.

Bird, acquired from Colorado last week, was disastrous in his Yankee debut on Friday in Miami, allowing four runs in 0.1 innings of work. He tossed an impressive scoreless inning one night later, striking out two in a perfect frame, but on Monday night, he surrendered a walk-off three-run home run in the tenth inning, sending the Yanks to a fourth straight loss.

So far this season, Bird has a 5.53 ERA in 55.1 innings. He was automatic to start the season, pitching to a 1.41 ERA through his first 28 appearances of the season, but since then, he has struggled badly. The change of scenery didn’t seem to help, so he will get some time in the minors while the Yanks bring back Leiter to take his place.
