Tiki Barber says the Yankees are not a team built to win a title, but his declaration runs deeper than based solely on how the team has been playing for the last month.
No, it’s much more than that. The Yankees are not a World Series team not just because of how they’re playing now, but because of how the organization runs the team in general.
“This team is not a World Series team,” Tiki said. “They are too old, not innovative in how they design their squad, how they bring up and nurture prospects. They’re not current in how they play baseball. They are current to baseball a decade or two decades ago, when it was like, ‘Hit as many home runs as you can.’ They are not reliable, and they are not fun when they get this way.”
The Yankees and their have long since prided themselves on being a “championship or bust” organization, but it’s been busts since 2009, and if their superstar leaves this winter, the team will be even further from getting back to where they’re convinced they belong. The only problem is, in Tiki’s eyes, the organization hasn’t looked or operated like that in a long time.
“When I think about what’s going to happen now and in the future, if Aaron Judge decides to bounce or if some of these prospects, who they’ve touted and put so much pressure on, don’t work out, how can Yankee fans scream, ‘We’re a World Series team!’” Tiki said. “You can’t! You have to change your destination point, Yankee fans.
“They’re a playoff team. I want to hear that from now on. ‘My Yankees are a solid playoff team!’ Because that’s all you’re getting, and that’s all you’ve gotten for the past decade.”
