Yankees outfielder Oscar Gonzalez suffered a scary injury in the team’s spring training finale in Mexico City on Monday night, fouling a ball off of his face before being carted off the field and sent to a nearby hospital.
Gonzalez was later diagnosed with a right orbital fracture after being treated at Estadio Alfedo Harp Helu, with the Yankees announcing that he would be kept overnight and undergo further tests on Tuesday.
Gonzalez was struck after fouling off an inside pitch that resulted in the ball ricocheting off of the handle of his bat and striking him directly in the face.
Earlier in the day, manager Aaron Boone announced that Gonzalez would begin the season in the minor leagues.
