Oswaldo Cabrera was wearing a unique necklace when he took the field as a defensive replacement in Tuesday night’s Subway Series opener, and the jewelry only got stranger as Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network explained the story behind it.
As Marakovits said on the TV broadcast, Cabrera’s necklace contained a tooth from his grandmother, fastened to a clasp attached to the gold necklace. Cabrera had told Marakovits before the game that his mother gave it to him and told him it would bring him good luck.
So, Cabrera decided he better listen to his mother, and wore it proudly in the outfield.
Cabrera struck out in his lone at-bat with the tooth around his neck.
