Sal Romano’s bizarre journey through the Yankees organization continues, as the team officially announced they have signed the free agent RHP to a Major League deal.
Bizarre because, earlier on Tuesday, the Yankees announced that Romano had elected free agency in lieu of an outright assignment to Triple-A, following his designation for assignment last week when Michael King was activated from the 60-day injured list.
Romano, 27, has allowed one earned run over three innings in three appearances with the Yankees, and is not in his third different stints with the team.
Originally signed in May after being DFA by the Reds, Romano spent two months in Triple-A before being called up on July 22. He appeared in two games before being DFA on July 31, and he was claimed by Milwaukee on August 3 – but made just one appearance for the Brewers before being DFA again on August 10.
Romano elected free agency and re-signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees on Aug. 13, and was in Scranton until being called up on September 9…and then DFA again Sept. 10 after one appearance.

Overall, Romano is 0-2 with a 5.84 ERA in 18 appearances (24 2/3 innings) with Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and the Yankees in 2021.
The Yankees had an open spot on the 28-man roster after optioning RHP Clarke Schmidt to Triple-A following Monday’s game, and made room on the 40-man roster by designating RHP Brooks Kriske for assignment.
