Joe Girardi has been relieved of his duties as Phillies manager following Philadelphia’s dreadful start to the 2022 season, the team announced Friday morning.
Bench coach Rob Thomson, who was also part of Joe Girardi’s coaching staff with the Yankees, will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season. in addition, coaching assistant Bobby Meachem was also relieved of his duties.

“It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capability,” team president Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. “While all of us share the responsibility for the shortcomings, I felt that a change was needed and that a new voice in the clubhouse would give us the best chance to turn things around.
Girardi was hired prior to the 2020 season and finishes his tenure with a record of 132-141, failing to help end the team’s painful playoff drought. The Phillies, coming off an offseason where they made notable additions like Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, have once again struggled with glaring bullpen problems and are 22-29 on the season, losers of seven of their last 10 and 12 games back of the first-place Mets.
