The Yankees announced Saturday morning that they have placed RHP Darren O'Day on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Friday) with a right rotator cuff strain, and recalled RHP Michael King from the Alternate Site.

O'Day, 38, signed with the Yankees this offseason and has appeared in 10 games, allowing three earned runs with nine strikeouts in nine innings. He last pitched in Thursday's loss to Baltimore, pitching the eighth inning and allowing one run on one hit and a walk.

Aaron Boone told reporters on Saturday that O'Day bad been battling a "cranky" shoulder for most of the season, and will have to be shut down for a few weeks.

"He’s kind of been cranky in the shoulder really all month," Boone said. "It started out a little bit early but was able to pitch through it, and the middle of the month it started to feel good and was a non-issue."

King has had three stints with the Yankees this season. He has pitched 11 scoreless innings and struck out 16 over three outings, but has been sent to the Alternate Site after each one.

The righty pitched six one-hit innings in relief of Domingo German on April 4, tossed three scoreless frames as the "bulk pitcher" behind Nick Nelson against the Rays on April 16, and, most recently, pitched the final two innings of the Yankees' win over Baltimore on April 28.

O'Day has had shoulder problems earlier in his career as well, but Boone hopes the veteran will be able to return and be a factor in what has been one of the best bullpens in the league this season.

"Over the last few days, it still was kind of in there cranky, so we decided to get it looked at and found there was a strain in there, so obviously he has to be shut down for a few weeks," Boone said.
