The Yankees lost two lefty relievers to the IL, including Zack Britton, who left his appearance early on Friday night with a hamstring injury.
In addition, Wandy Peralta was placed on the 10-day IL with a low back strain.
Britton hits the 10-day IL with what the Yanks listed as a hamstring strain, but Aaron Boone told reporters on Saturday that it was more of a cramping issue, and the decision to put him on the IL had a lot to do with his recent return from elbow surgery.
“I think based on the initial of what we saw last night, I feel like the news was better than we thought,” Boone said. “But especially with him just coming back, not something we want to push through and risk something else popping up. Hopefully it’s a short stint, but he is on the IL.”
Peralta hasn’t pitched in eight days, and his IL stint will be retroactive to June 23. He has a 5.28 ERA with the Yanks since being traded by the Giants for Mike Tauchman.
“He’s been dealing with a back issue the past four or five days,” Boone said. “He’s getting close to being ready to go, but just felt like he was still a day or two away, and being able to backdate it and not having a lot of activity the last few days, just felt it was the best way to go there.”
The Yanks hope to have another pair of southpaw relievers back soon in Justin Wilson and Darren O’Day, who are both on rehab assignments, but in the meantime, the team called up pitchers Brooks Kriske and Albert Abrue.
