Despite carrying plenty of hype early into his pro career, injuries and disappointing play on the field led to Estevan Florial being designated for assignment by the Yankees on Saturday.
Florial was DFA’d to make room for pitcher Colton Brewer, who was added to the major league roster after joining the team on Friday.
With no minor league options remaining, 2023 seemed like a make-or-break season for the 25-year-old Florial, but he instead won’t get a chance with the Yankees, who were high on the outfielder after a strong season in Low-A in 2017, but the once-promising prospect was unable to conquer his strikeout susceptibility.
Florial had been with the Yankee organization since 2015. He hit just .167 in spring training, and hit .185 in 63 big-league plate appearances.
