The Yankees lost again on Monday, helping the idle Rays gain another half game in the AL East standings, and now trail by just six in the loss column.
Sal wants to know: is it time to hit that panic button yet?
“Six in the loss column, and seven over Toronto, who won last night,” Sal said. “Are you at least mildly concerned yet? What number is it gonna take for you to be nervous? It could conceivably be five by September. A five-game lead is ‘Uh oh, the division is actually in play.’”
The Rays have one of the tougher remaining schedules the rest of the way, but also have six head-to-head matchups left with the Yanks, including a three-game series this weekend. There will be plenty of chances to directly make up ground. On the other hand, the Yanks have been struggling badly since the All-Star break, and still hold a seven-game lead.
But Sal says the way the Yankees have been playing should be the bigger focus when assessing whether or not this monumental collapse can actually happen.
“Forget the number of games,” Sal said. “It doesn’t really matter. They have played like crap for two months! After sweeping the Mets, I thought ‘Ok, typical Yankee run is coming, 10 of 12,’ and then they lose two in a row to Oakland.”
