Yankees release Marcus Stroman after adding trade deadline acquisitions to active roster

The Yankees have released Marcus Stroman after adding their trade deadline additions to the active roster.

New York announced Friday morning that David Bednar, Camilo Doval, Jake Bird, and Jose Caballero were all added to the roster, while the veteran Stroman was the casualty as a result of the roster crunch.

Stroman wasn't initially expected to be part of the Yankees' 2025 rotation, but after Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt went down with elbow injuries that required Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil still yet to make his season debut due to a lat injury, the veteran righty found playing time. He failed to make the most of it, pitching to a 6.23 ERA in 39 innings of work.

Stroman made his start on Thursday and allowed four runs and six hits over five innings of work, endangering what had been a 7-0 Yankee lead. In his start before that, he allowed four runs while walking four in 3.2 innings against the Phillies.

Stroman was signed to a two-year, $37 million contract before the 2024 season with a player option for 2026. He joins DJ LeMahieu as recent struggling veterans who the Yanks parted with despite still being under contract.

In 39 career games in pinstripes, Stroman pitched to a 4.69 ERA. His departure opens the door for Gil's return, as the righty is due back Sunday, and for Cam Schlittler to continue to get starts.
