Blake Snell is heading to San Francisco on a two-year deal with the Giants, ending speculation that the Yankees could splurge and add a major reinforcement in the wake of Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yanks made an effort to bring in the reigning NL Cy Young winner in recent days, but an agreement could not be reached.

Per Heyman, talks resumed between the Yankees and Snell’s camp “over the past few days,” but a deal never came close after the Yankees tried to find ways to work around the final luxury tax threshold, which would have forced the team to pay 110 percent of Snell’s salary to the tax.

Heyman reports that the Yankees will continue to look at potential starting pitching additions, but they are even less confident about Jordan Montgomery’s interest in returning to New York as they were in getting a deal done with Snell.
