Another blow for the Yankees’ bullpen: RHP Ron Marinaccio has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, with a stress reaction in his right shin, and he will not be an option for the ALDS.
RHP Albert Abreu has been reinstated from the IL to replace Marinaccio on the roster, the Yankees also added RHP Greg Weissert as the 29th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader, and RHP Matt Krook is also now with the team in Texas as part of the taxi squad for the final two days of the season.
Marinaccio left Sunday’s game with discomfort in his shin, something he said he has been dealing with all season. Tests earlier in the year were clean, but apparently, something showed up in the tests he had on Monday in New York, prompting the team to shut him down.
Not what he wanted, however.
“He wanted to pitch through it,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said prior to Tuesday’s Game 1, “but there are concerns that it could get worse. It’s a blow, but hopefully, he’ll be an option if we advance.”
It is indeed a blow, as Marinaccio had established himself as a high-leverage option this year, posting a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings – including a 1.13 mark in his last 40 innings after a rough outing against Baltimore in late April.
The Yankees now have Marinaccio and Wandy Peralta on the IL (although Peralta could be activated for the ALDS) and have Clay Holmes shut down for the remainder of the Texas series with a shoulder strain, although they did get Miguel Castro back Monday and now Abreu.
Scott Effross got the save on Monday after Luis Severino pitched seven no-hit innings and Castro pitched a rocky eighth, and given the circumstances, the Yankees will likely continue to try to find situations for all of their relievers over the next three games to try to determine a postseason group – one that is now missing Marinaccio for at least one round, as he cannot be activated until at least October 18, the day before the ALCS is set to begin.
